150 Terrorists Killed in US Drone Strike on al-Shabab Training Camp

7 March 2016

Washington Post (SOMALIA) – A U.S. drone strike in Somalia killed more than 150 at a training camp of the terrorist group, al-Shabab. The camp, located north of Mogadishu, has been on the radar of US intelligence for several weeks. The camp was home to a large group of al-Shabab fighters who were due to leave in the coming days, making them an imminent threat to both the U.S. and African Union forces in the region. This provided the reasoning for the authorization of the drone strike, which resulted in no civilian casualties. Source: (Reliability: High)

Turkey Arrests Two ISIS Militants at Syrian Border

7 March 2016

IBT (TURKEY) – Turkish security forces have arrested two suspected ISIS fighters at Syrian border crossing. The militants had with them a bag that contained 10 slabs of plastic explosives, a suicide vest, and a detonator. This arrest is a result of Turkey’s recent improvements in counter-terrorism measures, such as ramping up border security in order to deal with the large numbers of Syrian refugees. Turkey has endured several attacks by extremists in recent months, including an October suicide bombing in Ankara that left more than 100 dead. In December, Turkish authorities arrested two extremists who were planning a suicide bombing for New Year’s Eve in Ankara. Source: (Reliability: High)

Tunisian Security Forces Kill 28 Islamic Militants at Border Town Clash

7 March 2016

BBC (TUNIS) – A clash between Tunisian security forces and Islamic militants in the Tunisian border town of Ben Guerdane ended with 28 militants killed. The militants illegally crossed the Libyan border and attacked the town, an army base, and a police station, killing 7 civilians and 9 security force members. This comes only a week after Tunisian forces killed 5 militants attacking in the same area. The attacks only heighten the Tunisian fear of radical fighters based in Libya having access to the country through loose borders. To heighten security, the border crossing at Ras Jdeir has been closed, as well as all entrances to the town of Ben Guerdane. Additionally, authorities have dug a trench along the border to make it more difficult for militants to enter the country. Source: (Reliability: High)
